Pellet: getting to know
this heating system better

The heat of a pellet stove

Despite all its success, this system is still relatively unknown. We’ll try to present the most salient features of these next-generation stoves below.

What are Pellets?

Wood pellets are made from wood industry scrap and pressed into the form of tiny cylinders from 6 to 8 millimeters in diameter up to 30 mm long. They are therefore heavier and more compact than wood thanks to the compression it has been given. That’s why at equivalent volumes, the combustion of pellets produces more heat than the usual wood. Pellets are considered renewable energy sources because when the trees they are taken from are felled, new trees are planted again and again in a continuous cycle.

Pellet stove energy efficiency

Pellets are widely used as fuel in elegant stoves to heat the living rooms of private homes and other relatively small areas, but they can also be used in larger burners to heat the whole house. Because they have been so densely pressed, they also offer the benefit of occupying little storage space. As many as 650 kg of pellets can be stored in just one cubic meter, which amounts to very little space indeed when compared to the tanks that hold gas and liquid fuels.

How to choose your pellet stove

Choosing the most appropriate pellet stove model isn’t very hard if you know the volume of the area you need to heat. The most popular are semiautomatic stoves that you light by just pressing a button. The autonomy of the heating ranges from 15 to 45 hours. These models switch on and off with an adjustable thermostat that can even be programmed for time band operation. As regards aesthetics, there are models for insertion in the most modern interiors and others suited to more “vintage” surroundings. The pellet stoves that create the most suggestive atmosphere are the ones with a glass face that show the fire burning inside.
